Hypocrites R US(A)
So while the US goes gallivanting around the world upholding "Truth, Justics & the American Way" (as said in the Lost Boys), and insisting that all countries revere their great universal values of religious tolerance (ha ha), democracy and the freedom of speech, back at home they are busy censoring some of the worlds best known lyrics!
Apparently they decided to censor the explicit words (that would be "come" and "cock" then?) because "they might cause offence to a number of people" (quoted on BBC 6 O'clock news tonight).
Of course, that is NOTHING like some people being offended by a bunch of cartoons, cos they are all radical violent islamofascits who wouldn't know freedom of speech if it hit them in the face. It would have been TOTALLY wrong to censor those!
BTW -IMO both the cartoons & lyrics are perfectly acceptable forms of free speech, although a couple of the cartoons were in poor taste.

...and yet, immediately following the Super Bowl, Grey's Anatomy came on AT 7:30PM on the west coast, with an opening scene that I was uncomfortable watching- I can only imagine parents who hadn't changed the channel yet and had children in the room!

what was that Grey's Anatomy about because they showed the commercial during the Super Bowl like all day and I fortunately turned the game off before it came on--just curious.

I'm sure your surprise is put on Mrs A. Censorship in the US, never, I'm sure that you know that the land of the free is the world's largest producer of porn! :-)

Forgot to mention, bearing in mind Mr A's work/blog issues your real name is plastered all over Technorati. I spotted it earlier when seeing which blogs linked to mine.

Grey's Anatomy featured George's wet dream of the three girls licking all over each other in the shower. I consider myself, just a hair short of prude on such things and I was surprised it was being aired too. Although, I suppose if it was one of the girl's wet dreams and they featured three of the guys licking all over each other, that would have been scandalous and never would have aired. Such is the sexual bias of our censors. Anyway, I thought, it's 10:30 p.m. and though I'm surprised they aired that, most children should have been in bed. I didn't change the channel because I like the show, so I just used the parental pillow to cover my eyes. ;-) Oh, and Mrs. A., right on about the censorship crap. Like our ears or those of most of our children in public schools haven't heard worse? Pulllease!

I have to say I've never even heard of grey's anatomy (well, I've heard of the famous book obviously, but not the TV series? movie?). Aggie did a blog about TV censorship a while back & basically the brits don't have much of a problem with any (legal) sex acts being shown on TV provided it's after the (rather arbitary) 9 o'clck watershed. I guess the problem in the US is the time diferences across the cntry, so a nationwide broadcast will air at different times in different places. They could always give out a warning before hand. We get "this program shows scenes of a sexually explicit nature" or "strong language is used in this feature from the outset".
Dave -of course I'm not surprised (although the context is just ridiculous!), but sometimes I have this burning need to point out the lunacy:-)

It is soooo damn depressing...I don't know anybody that isn't beside themselves with worry about where our beloved country is going with this present administration and the Heavy Climate of censorship; our rights being chipped away more and more; and a laundry list that could send you into a nervous breakdown...I honestly do not remember a time as frighening and as disheartening as this period...I cannot stand it and nobody I know can!!

Actually, it was the TV station executives that passed the censorship ruling, not the USofA.
That being said ... yeah, in reality, freedom of speech means; mind your political P's & Q's and the elected official's hounds will leave you alone. Traipse anywhere near their territory and they'll surreptitiously destroy you ... because, um ... they can.
However, the US isn't exclusive in having a government that silences the people. It's the way of the world.

VV is right, children should be in bed and if there is scandalous stuff on TV after 8'oclock then it is the fault of the parents not the networks, if the children see it.

Of course not, although IMO it is one of the worst culprits in the "free" world. However, it is the country taking it upon itself to tell the rest of the world how important it is that those freedoms are protected & enforced at all costs.

Lets face it this PC and 'freespeech'crap has gone mad. *sigh* it'd be laughable if it wasn't so depressing.

Um, yeah, no argument here. Clever of them, isn't it? Not to mention, downright freakin' scary. And such is politics ... IMO.

Hmmm....censorship, eavesdropping, the so-called patriot act...Um, I'm see a cross between the dark ages and Big Brother. As for the superbowl....oh yes, yes, let's censor Mick - god forbid he say a naughty word (and no one who doesn't know the song is going to understand him cuz he's moving at 80miles an hour around the stage), but let's not censor Janet & Justin just two years before. This is what should be censored, one letter..."W". There are times I am very very ashamed.
